4、thereforeadditionalbackhaul,isbeingdrivenbytherisingpopularityofconnecteddevices–smartphones,tabletsandlaptops–aswellasbymobileappsandcloudcomputing.Inthefewyearssincesmartphoneshavebeencommerciallyavailable,shipmentshaverisendrastically,reachingalmost500millionunitsin

5、2011,whentheysurpassedPcshipmentsforthefirsttime[1].Smartphoneusersareconsumingmoredatathaneverbefore:anaverageofabout300MBpermonth[2],andhavedownloadedmorethan15billionapplicationsfromApple’sAppStorealonesinceitfirstopenedforbusinessin2008[2].Smartphoneshipments,bandw

6、idth-heavyservicesandrisingpopularityofapplicationsaresomeofthedriversbehindthetenfoldincreasethatisexpectedinmobiletrafficduringthenextfiveyears–reachingaprojectedglobalmonthlytotalofalmost5,000petabytesbytheendof2016[3].Mostoperatorswillbeabletomeettheserisingtraffic

7、demandsforsomeyearstocomeby:deployingmoreadvancedhsPaandltetechnologies;gainingaccesstoadditionalspectrum;implementingtechniquesthataremorespectrum-efficient;anddensifyingthemacrolayer.However,continuedenhancementanddensificationmaynotalwaysbethemostcost-efficientwayto
