3、ctionusingearth-shelteredconstructionknownasan‘Earthship’hasbeendevelopedandpioneeredbyUSKeywords:architectMichaelReynoldsandrecentlyintroducedtotheUK.The‘Earthship’takesontheconceptofanEarth-sheltered‘independentvessel’,whichoperatesonaself-sufficientbasisandisconstructedlargelyfromrecycledEarths

4、hipandreclaimedmaterials.Althoughthereareupto3000globally,onlytwoEarthshipshavebeenbuiltinThermalstoragetheUK–oneinBrightonandoneinScotland.ThepublicityresultingfromtheplanningapprovalgrantedinApril2007fortheconstructionofsixteendomesticEarthshipsattheseafrontofBrightonhaveraisedpublicawarenessto

5、thistypeofunconventionalconstruction.AkeyfeatureoftheEarthshipdesignistheuseofathermalstore,whichactsasaseasonalheatbuffertoabsorbheatinthesummerandtoreleaseheatinthewinter,toregulatetheroomtemperature.Thispaperreportsontheinitialfindingsofalong-termstudyonthethermalbehaviourofthethermalstoreandit

6、seffecttotheindoorenvironment.ItintroducesthedesignandconstructionprinciplesoftheEarthshipandoutlinestheprocessandequipmentusedinthethermalmonitoringofthebuilding.Indicativeresultsfromtheanalysesofthedatacollectedattheearlystagearereportedanddiscussed.Initialfindingshavedemonstratedtheeffectivenes
