2、-ceived,bymeansofhandwrittenmanuscripts.YetwhilescholarsofmedievalEuropeanliteraturehavedevotedconsiderableattentiontotheissuesatstakewhenapproachingtextsproducedbeforetheageofprint,researchonTangpoetry,whetherinAsiaortheWest,haspaidlittleattentiontothesest
3、udiesandwhatrelevancetheymighthaveforthestudyoftheproductionandcirculationofpoeticliteratureintheparticularmanuscriptcultureoftheTang.1Thisstateofaffairsisunderstandable:asmuchEuropeanliteratureconsideredtobemedi-evalwasproducedmorerecentlythantheTangandwas
4、writtennotonpaperbutonthefarmoredurable(ifexpensiveanddifficulttomanufacture)mediaofparchmentorvelum,2agooddealofitisstillextant.China’searlyinventionanduseofpaper,acheaperbutalsomorefragilematerial,didmeanthatliteracyandtextualproductionweresubstantiallymo
