3、findustryclustersonthebasisofunevenlydistributedresources,andhistorianshaveprovidedrichdescriptiveinsightintothedevelopmentaldynamicsofparticularmetropolitanregions,littlesystematictheoryhasbeenadvancedtoexplaincross-regionalinflowsandoutflowsofresources,especiallywithrespecttopatternsinclusterd
4、evelopment.Thispaperexaminestheconceptofregionalindustrialidentityasasocialcodethat(1)arisesfromthesharedunderstandingsofresidentsandexternalaudiencesaboutthesuitabilityofaregionforparticularkindsofbusinessactivityand(2)influencesdecisionsaboutwheretolocateinvestments.Wearguethatsuchunderstandi
5、ngsareprincipallyinformedbyconfigurationsofindustryclustersthathavealreadyformedinaregion.Clusters,whicharetheresultsofhistoricalinvestments,arealsoimportantsignalsaboutthetypesofbusinessthatcanthriveinthefuture.Wedeveloptheoreticalpropositionslinkingcharacteristicsofregionalindustryclusterconfi
6、gurations,inparticularclusterdominanceandclusterinterrelatedness,tothestrengthandfocusofregionalidentityand,asaresult,tothetypesandamountsofresourcesthatwilldevelopwithinandflowintoandoutofregions.Keywords:regionaleconomicdevelopment;industryclusters;regionalindustrialidentityWhyindustrycluster
