2、icleproposessixreasonsforthisexclusionofinfantsfromanthropologicaldiscussion.Theseincludethefieldworker’sownmemoriesandparentalstatus,theproblematicquestionofagencyininfantsandtheirpre-sumeddependenceonothers,theirroutineattachmenttowomen,theirseeminginabil
3、itytocommunicate,theirinconvenientpropensitytoleakfromavarietyoforifices,andtheirappar-entlylowquotientofrationality.YetinvestigationofhowinfantsareconceivedofbeyondtheindustrializedWestcanleadustoenvisionthemfardifferentlyfromhowtheyareconceivedintheWest(i
4、ncludingbyanthropologists).Confrontingsuchcomparativedatasuggeststhedesir-abilityofconsideringinfantsasbothrelevantandbeneficialtotheanthropologicalendeavor.[babies/infants,childhood/youth,structure/agency,socialtheory,WestAfrica]WhereHaveAllTheBabiesGone?W
5、hatevertheirparentingskillsathome,mostcon-Yeteveninthesewritingsinfantsreceivedlesstemporaryculturalanthropologistsdonotseemtoattentionthandidolderchildren.Andcriticshavethinkanalyticallymuchaboutbabies.Ofcoursethispointedoutthatthemodeltypicallyoverlookedv
6、ari-doesnotmeanthatwedonotlikebabies.Butinourationsintime(historicalchange)andspace(ethnic-professionalliveswehaveoftenignoredthosesmallity/race,class,religion,andgender).Moreover,acreatures,whodonotseemtoholdoutmuchschol-Freudianperspectiveprecludedalterna
7、tiveinterpreta-arlypromise,aswehavedefinedtheethnographictionsthatmightbemoreappropriateinagivencul-imagination.Atatheoreticallevelbabiesconstituteturalsetting.AsMeadherselfacknowledgedinherformostofusanon-subject,occupyingnegativelateryears(1963),Eurocentr
