5、aturesofthe‘neweconomy’istheclaimthatduetoanincreasedrateoftechnologicalchangeandwidespreadderegulation,marketsliketelecommunications,computing,andentertainmentareconvergingandwillonedayevolveintoahugemultimediaindustry(e.g.Collis/Bane/Bradley,Economist2000).Whatissurp
6、risingisthatthenotionofconvergenceisoftenusedinthiscontext,butseldomclearlydefined,makingitsmeaningquitevague(Katz1996).Forexample,Choi/Valikangas(2001,426,theiremphasis)recentlydefinedconvergenceindiscriminatelyastheblurringof“boundariesbetweenindustriesbyconvergingva
7、luepropositions,technologies,andmarkets.”Asaresult,marketconvergenceoftenmeansdifferentthingstodifferentauthors.TheideathatmarketsconvergegoesbacktoRosenberg(1976)andhisstudyoftheemergenceandevolutionoftheUSmachinetoolindustry.Intheearly1800s,machineswereconstructedin-
