3、onnetworksthatarebestsuitedforavarietyofcustomerandproductcharacteristics.0.IntroductionDistributionreferstothestepstakentomoveandstoreaproductfromthesupplierstagetoacustomerstageinthesupplychain.Distributionisakeydriveroftheoverallprofitabilityofafirm

4、becauseitdirectlyimpactsboththesupplychaincostandthecustomerexperience.Gooddistributioncanbeusedtoachieveavarietyofsupplychainobjectivesrangingfromlowcosttohighresponsiveness.Asaresult,companiesinthesameindustryoftenselectverydifferentdistributionnetwo

5、rks.DelldistributesitsPCsdirectlytoendconsumers,whilecompanieslikeHewlettPackardandCompaqdistributethroughresellers[3].DellcustomerswaitseveraldaystogetaPCwhilecustomerscanwalkawaywithanHPorCompaqPCfromareseller.GatewayopenedGatewayCountrystoreswherecu

6、stomerscouldcheckouttheproductsandhavesalespeoplehelpthemconfigureaPCthatsuitedtheirneeds.Gateway,however,chosetosellnoproductsatthestores,withallPCsshippeddirectly1fromthefactorytothecustomer.In2001,Gatewayclosedseveralofthesestoresgiventheirpoorfinan
