4、role.However,inmorerecentversionsofgenreanalysiscontexthasbeenassignedamoreimportantrole,redefininggenreasaconfigurationoftext-internalandtext-externalresources,thushighlightingtwokindsofrelationshipsinvolvingtextsandcontexts.Interrelationshipswithinandacrosstextsfocusin
5、gprimarilyontext-internalpropertiesareviewedasintertextualinnature,whereasinteractionswithinandacrossgenresinvolvingprimarilytext-externalresourcesmaybeviewedasinterdiscursiveinnature.Intertextualityhasbeengivenconsiderableattentionindiscourseandgenretheory;interdiscursi
6、vityhoweverhasattractedrelativelylittleattention.Thispaperexploresthenatureandfunctionofinterdiscursivityingenretheory,claimingthatitiscentraltotheunderstandingofprofessionalgenres,thusarguingforamovetowardsCriticalGenreAnalysis.Indoingso,thepaperalsoidentifiesandexplore
