3、cteristicsamongmonophthongal(ay),velarfrontingof–ing,theSouthernVowelShift(SVS),or“drawl”contributesmoretotheperceptofstrongerSouthernaccent.Theformertwohaveawealthofstudies;thelattertwoareinvestigatedindetailinthisstudy.Ch.2looksattheSVSinsociolinguisticinterviewdataf
4、romsevenyoungwomenfromtheRiverton,Alabama,areanearHuntsville.Resultsshowthattheseyoungwomenparticipatelittleinthehighfrontvowelshiftbutoftenhaveshiftedmidfrontvowels.Ch.3explorestheideaof“drawl”,findingthatneitherlaypeoplenorlinguistshaveaclear,unifiednotionofwhatconst
5、itutesthisphenomenon.Thechapterpresentsataxonomyofdrawltypesandthevowelsandlinguisticenvironmentsthatcorrelatewithuse.MeasuresofEuclideanDistanceandSlopewereappliedtodrawledtokensoftheRivertonwomen,andrevealedthattriphthongshavemuchfarthermovementthanothertypeswithinac
6、ousticspace.Iargueformorepreciseusesofdrawlandbreaking,addingtheconcepthiatification(insertinghiatusintoavowel)totheanalyticset.Ch.4’ssurveyusedthematchedguisetechniquetogatherlistenerperceptsusingallpermutationsofthefourfeatures.Resultsshowthat,overall,lowered/e/anddr
7、awlcontributemosttoaperceivedstrongerSouthernaccent.Drawlandvelarfrontinginfluencednon-Southerners’perceptsofstrongaccentmorethantheydidSoutherners’,implyingthattheidentitiesandstylesspeakersprojectvialinguisticfeaturesmaybeinterpreteddifferentlybydifferentlisteners.Th
