2、340,USAABSTRACT:Themaingoalofthisstudywastoassesstheeffectsofalgaldetsandwatersahityonthebodilycontentofdimethylsulfoniopropionate(DMSP)inestuarinecopepods.Inlaboratoryexperi-ments,TemoralongicorniscontainedmoreDMSPwhenfedDMSP-richTetraselmisimpellucida(prasinophyte)thanwhenfedD
3、MSP-poorDunaLiellatertiolecta(chlorophyte).TheDMSPcontentofT.longicornisaftergutclearancewascurvilinearlyrelatedtotheingestionrate.Theseobservationssug-gestthatthecopepodsincorporatedthedietarysourceofDMSPintotheirbodytissue.Onthesamediet,T.longicorniscontainedmoreDMSPathighersa
4、linity,indicatinganosmoregulatoryfunctionofDMSP.However,DMSPappearstobeaminorosmolytecomparedwithfreeaminoacids.TheDMSPcontentofT.longicornisdecreasedfasterinresponsetoadecreaseinsalinitythanitincreasedwithanincreaseinsalinity,implicatingseparatemechanismsforaccumulationandremov
5、alofDMSPinthecopepod.WealsomeasuredthebodilycontentofDMSPfromfield-collectedanimals.FivespeciesofcalanoidcopepodsfromLongIslandSoundcontainedDMSP,notassociatedwithgutcontent,whichvariedinterspecificallyfrom0.02to1.03nmolind:'Carbon-specificDMSPcontentofthecopepodswascomparableto
