2、recommonissuesinequinepracticeandareoftenconsideredtobeacauseofpoor1performance,stiffnessinthebackand/orabnormalityofthehindlimbgaitinsporthorses.Historyandclinicalsignsareoftennonspecificandadefinitediagnosisisachallenge.Backpainhasbeenmoreandmorerecognizedasacontributingorevencausin
3、gfactorinequinelamenessinrecentyears.Theprevalenceofbackproblemsinhorsesvariesgreatly(from0.9%to94%),dependingonthespecializationortypeofpracticesurveyed.Diagnosisofbackpainrequiresathoroughclinicalexaminationcombinedwithimagingtechniques.Veterinariansoftenhavedifficultieswhendealingw
4、ithahorsethathasnoobviouslocalizedpainoravague,unspecified2lameness.Neckorbackproblemsandlimblamenessareofteninterrelated.Distallimbinjuriescancauseanalterationincarriageoftheaffectedlimbandalteredgait,whichcansubsequently2,3overworkorinjureproximallimbmusculatureandtheparaspinalmuscu
5、lature.Similarly,vertebralcolumnorsacroiliacjointinjuriescanproducegaitabnormalities,increasedconcussive4forces,anddistallimblameness.Atthehorseback,sacroiliacjointosteoarthritishasbeenrecognizedasasignificantcauseofbackpainandpoorperformanceinhorses.About15%ofcompetitionhorses,especi
6、allyjumperandeventinghorsesarereportedtobeclinicallyaffectedbyosteoarthritisofthesacroiliacjoint.Clinicalsignsofsacroiliacosteoarthritisareoftennon-specificandmayincludepoorperformance,refusalofjumps,lackoflimbimpulsion,poorcroup2-5,6muscling,backsoreness,resistancetotrotoralowgradeor
