2、.allocatedbandwidth)ofsourcestraffic(i.e.usersorcompaniesrequiringnetworkservices).Usuallyordinaryandpremiumsourcetraffic-typeareconsideredsuchthatbandwidthisallocatedtothefirstprovidedasufficientrateisguaranteedtothelatter.Themainideaistouseexistingprotocols(e.g.TCP/IP,ATM)toprovideanexplicitfeedback

3、aboutthenetworkstateforthecongestionorratenetworkcontrolsystem.Theideaofusingexplicitfeedbacktoperformcongestioncontrolhasbeenexploredinthewiredcon-textandmorerecentlyinwirelessnetworkenvironment.SeminalworksonATMnetworkproposedmechanismsforprovidingexplicit-ratecontrolforordinaryavail-ablebitrate

4、(ABR)traffic.Then,intherecentyearsmanyworkshavebeenexploitedactivequeuemanagement(AQM)schemesinTCP/ip-ATMnetworkstodeliverpre-emptivelycongestionnotificationtothesourceforreducingitstransmissionrateandthereforeavoidingbufferoverflow.DesignexamplesofratecontrollerforATMnet-workscanbefoundin[1–4],justt

5、ociteafew.ActiveQueueManagement(AQM)strategiestoimprovetheperformanceoftheexistingprotocolsareproposedforwirednetworksin[5,6].Otherapproachesconsideredtheproblemofexplicit-ratecontrol[7,8].In[9]theauthorsexploreanewcongestioncontrolalgorithm(e.g.,ratecontrolprotocol(RCP))sothatarouterassignsasingl

6、eratetoallflowsthatpassthroughit.Differentcontrolschemeshavebeenproposedforwirelessnetworks(e.g.,see[10–13]).Therecentincreasingdiffusionofremoteandwebapplicationismoti-vatingthedevelopmentofcongestionandratecontrolschemesinordertoenhancetheexistingwired/wirelessprotocolstofacewiththerequirementper

7、formanceofthespecificapplication.Examplescanbefoundin[14–20]wherecongestioncontroltechniquesareproposedtoenhanceapplicationandtransportlayerperformanceoftheexistingprotocolsintermsofvariablejitter,bandwidth,orcong
