3、tionalimprovementinmathematicsanddrawononeofthefewdesignstudiesthatdoesthisasanillustrativecase.Designstudiesconductedatthelevelofaneducationalsystemareinterventionistinna-ture,andcanaddressboththecomplexityofeducationalsettingsandtheproblemsthateducationalsystemleaders,schoolleaders
4、,andteachersencounterastheyworktoimprovethequalityofclassroominstruction,schoolinstructionalleader-ship,andultimately,students’mathematicslearning.Thischapterdescribesthetheoreticalbackgroundforthisapproach,inwhichtheissueofwhatittakestosupportinstructionalimprovementonalargescaleisf
5、ramedasanexplicitfocusofempiricalinvestigation.DESIGNRESEARCHFORSYTEM-WIDEIMPROVEMENT3Ourpurposeinthischapteristodescribeamethodologyforconductingeducationaldesignresearchtosupportlargescaleinstructionalimprovementinmathematics.Incountrieswithcentralizededucationsystems,largescalemig
6、htmeaninstructionalimprovementatthenationallevel.Incountrieswithdecentral-izededucationsystems,theappropriateorganizationalunitisthelargestadminis-trativejurisdictionthatcansupportcoordinatedimprovementefforts.Inthischap-ter,thislargestunitwillbereferredtoastheeducationalsystemorsyst
7、em.Forthepurposeofthischapter,wedefinedesignresearchasafamilyofmethodologicalapproachesinwhichresearchandthedesignofsupportsforlearn-ingareinterdependent.Ontheonehand,thedesignofsupportsservesasthecon-textforresearchand,ontheotherhand,ongoingandretrospectiveanalysesareconductedinorde
