3、ouldbeusefulasaprimaryreferenceand,moreimportantly,asatextbookinagrad-uatecourse(suchastheonethatmycolleagueJimKellyandIhavebeenteaching)—shouldincorporatemoderntreatmentsofconstitutivetheory(includingthermodynamicsandinternalvariables),large-deformationplas-ticity,andd
4、ynamicplasticity.Bynocoincidence,itispreciselythesetopics—ratherthanthetraditionalstudyofelastic-plasticboundary-valueprob-lems,slip-linetheoryandlimitanalysis—thathavebeenthesubjectofmyownresearchinplasticitytheory.Ialsofeelthatabasictreatmentofplasticitytheoryshouldco

6、upplementreadingsfromvariousavailablesources.Withtheaidofcontemporaryword-processingtechnology,theclassnotescametoresemblebookchapters,promptingsomestudentsandcolleaguestoask,“Whydon’tyouwriteabook?”Itwasthesequeriesthatgavemetheideaofcomposinga“little”bookthatwoulddisc
