2、geforAmericaandtheworld.Atthismoment,menandwomenalongmycountry'sGulfCoastarerecoveringfromoneoftheworstnaturaldisastersinAmericanhistory.Manyhavelosthomes,andlovedones,andalltheirearthlypossessions.InAlabamaandMississippiandLouisiana,wholeneighborhoodshaveb
3、eenliftedfromtheirfoundationsandsentcrashingintothestreets.AgreatAmericancityisworkingtoturnthefloodwatersandreclaimitsfuture.Wehavewitnessedtheawesomepowerofnature--andthegreaterpowerofhumancompassion.Americanshaverespondedtotheirneighborsinneed,andsohavem
4、anyofthenationsrepresentedinthischamber.Alltogether,morethan115countriesandnearlyadozeninternationalorganizationshavesteppedforwardwithoffersofassistance.Toeverynation,everyprovince,andeverycommunityacrosstheworldthatisstandingwiththeAmericanpeopleinthishou
5、rofneed,Iofferthethanksofmynation.Yourresponse,liketheresponsetolastyear'stsunami,hasshownonceagainthattheworldismorecompassionateandhopefulwhenweacttogether.ThistruthwastheinspirationfortheUnitedNations.TheU.N.'sfoundingmemberslaidoutgreatandhonorablegoals
6、inthechartertheydraftedsixdecadesago.Thatdocumentcommitsthisorganizationtoworkto"savesucceedinggenerationsfromthescourgeofwar,""reaffirmfaithinfundamentalhumanrights,"and"promotesocialprogressandbetterstandardsoflifeinlargerfreedom."Weremaincommittedtothose
7、nobleideals.Aswerespondtogreathumanitarianneeds,wemustactivelyrespondtotheothergreatchallengesofourtime.Wemustcontinuetoworktoeasesuffering,andtospreadfreedom,andtolaythefoundationsoflastingpeaceforourchildrenandgrandchildren.Inthisyoungcentury,thefarcorner
8、softheworldarelinkedmorecloselythaneverbefore--andnonationcanremainisolatedandindifferenttothestrugglesofothers.Whenacountry,oraregionisfilledwithdespair,andresentmentandvulnerabletoviolentandaggressiv
