1、EightdecadesofhistoryItwasintheyear1910thatthegovernmententrustedMarquésdelaVegaInclántheprojectofcreatingahotelnetwork,practicallynon-existentinthecountryatthetime,whichwouldprovideaccommodationfortouristsandimproveSpain’sinternationalimage.In1926,contin
2、uingthisProjectandfromtheofficeoftheRoyalTourismCommissioncreatedin1911,DelaVegaInclánimpelledtheconstructionofahotelintheGredosMountainswhichwouldopenupthewondersofthisplace’slandscapetotourism.TheideaexcitedKingAlfonsoXIII,whochosethelocationpersonally.
3、WorkbeganinAugustofthissameyearandwascompletedonthe9thofOctober1928withitsinaugurationbytheKinghimself.ThiswastobecomethefirstestablishmentofthesubsequentnetworkofParadoresdeEspaña,theParadordeGredos.Withthisfirstestablishmentinaugurated,the‘BoardofParado
4、resandInnsofSpain’wasdrawnupandeffortswerefocussedonperfectingtheoriginalideaandmakinguseofchosenhistoricalandartisticmonumentsandareasofgreatnaturalbeautytoestablishnewParadores.Inthefavourableclimateofthetwentiestheresultsofthefirstadministrationandthei
5、mminentLatinAmericanExpositionreinforcedtheprojectandinspiredtheconstructionofnewParadores,nowinmonumentalbuildings,suchasthoseinauguratedinOropesa(1930),Úbeda(1930),CiudadRodrigo(1931)andMérida(1933),amongothers.Atthesametimethefirstlodginghousesthatwere
6、beingintegratedintothenetworkwouldalsoopentothepublic,suchasManzanares(1932),Bailén(1933)andBenicarló(1935).WiththepassingoftheyearsParadorescontinuedtospreadoutovertheentirecountry.Thiswasalsoanepochmarkedbythedevelopmentofinfrastructuressuchasroads,rail
7、ways,airports,ports…TheCivilWar,naturally,meantnotjuststagnationbutaslumpfortourism.Someoftheinfrastructurescomprisingthenetworkweredamagedorusedashospitals,butoncetheconflictwasover,theidea6wasconsolidatedandanewimpulsewasproducedwiththerestorationandreo
