3、ticalmeasureswillbeincreasinglyimportantasdataquality,confidenceanduncertaintyarebecominginfluentialcharacteristicstointegrateintovisualizations.1IntroductionUnderstandingdatasetsisessentialtothescientificprocess.However,discerningthesig-nificanceofdatabylooking
4、onlyattheirvaluesisaformidabletask.Descriptivestatisticsareaquickandconcisewaytoextracttheimportantcharacteristicsofadatasetbysumma-rizingthedistributionthroughasmallsetofparameters.Typically,median,mode,mean,variance,andquantilesareusedforthispurpose.Themai
5、ngoalofdescriptivestatisticsistodescribequicklythecharacteristicsoftheunderlyingdistributionofadatasetthroughasimplifiedsetofvalues.Oftentheseparametersprovideinsightsintothedatathatwouldotherwisebehidden.Inaddition,thesedatasummariesfacilitatethecomparisonof
6、multi-pledatasets.Methodsforvisuallypresentingsummarystatisticsincludetables,charts,andgraphicalplots.Graphicalplotsareinterestinginthattheypictoriallyconveyalargeamountofinformationinaconcisewaythatallowsforquickinterpretationandunderstandingofthedata.There
7、aremanygraphicalwaystopresentdescriptivestatistics,socoveringallofthosemethodsherewouldbeimpractical.Thissurveywillfocusononeofthemostcommontechniquesforsummarizingdata,theboxplot.Inadditiontovariouswaystoconstructthestandardboxplot,modificationswhichincrease
