2、kquitedifferentlydependingonthereasonformodelingtheminthefirstplace.Therearemanyreasonsformodelingaprocess.Thefirstoneissimplytounderstandtheprocessandtoshareourunderstandingoftheprocesswiththepeoplewhoareinvolvedwiththeprocessonadailybasis.Indeed,processparticipa
3、ntstypicallyperformquitespecializedactivitiesinapro-cesssuchthattheyarehardlyconfrontedwiththecomplexityofthewholeprocess.Therefore,processmodelinghelpstobetterunderstandtheprocessandtoidentifyandpreventissues.Thissteptowardsathoroughunderstandingistheprerequisi
4、tetoconductprocessanalysis,redesignorautomation.InthischapterwewillbecomefamiliarwiththebasicingredientsofprocessmodelingusingtheBPMNlanguage.Withtheseconcepts,wewillbeabletopro-ducebusinessprocessmodelsthatcapturesimpletemporalandlogicalrelationsbetweenactiviti
5、es,dataobjectsandresources.First,wewilldescribesomeessentialconceptsofprocessmodels,namelyhowprocessmodelsrelatetoprocessinstances.Then,wewillexplainthefourmainstructuralblocksofbranchingandmerginginprocessmodels.Thesedefineexclusivedecisions,parallelexecution,in
6、clusivede-cisionsandrepetition.Finally,wewillcoverinformationartifactsandresourcesinvolvedinaprocess.3.1FirstStepswithBPMNWithover100symbols,BPMNisafairlycomplexlanguage.Butasalearner,thereisnoreasontopanic.Ahandfulofthosesymbolswillalreadyallowyoutocovermanyofy
