5、etheoriesarecreatedbutoftenfoundlittlepracticaluseoncetheyareappliedtotherealworld. Overthehistoryofcivilization,theacademyhasplayedveryimportantroles,suchasdevelopingphilosophy,literatureandarts,scienceandengineering,etc.,broadeningtheviewsofhumanbeings. Totaketwoexamples,theTheoryofRelati
6、vity(AlbertEinstein),andtheUniverseBigBangModel(LemaitreGeorges),arebothbasedonlogicaldeductionwithcertainobservation. Asweknow,thesetheoriescontributetothefoundationofmodernastronomyandphysics,greatlyimpactingnotonlyourviewoftheworld,butourdailylifeaswell. Hence,therehavebeen,andwillalwaysb
7、e,newdiscoveriesandtheoriesbenefitinguscomingfromtheacademy,orthe“ivorytowers”. Todenythishistory,andtoclaimthatallthehumanprogressofknowledgecomesfrompractice,isnotapprovedbyfacts. However,thecriticismtoward“ivorytower”comesfromadifferentperspective:itpointstothefactthatsomeoftheviewsfromac
8、ademy,orpeopleontop,areoutoftouchwithrealitysotheybecomeirrelevanttotheneedsoftherealworld. Thiscriticismismoreorlessjustifiedandapplaudedmostlybypeoplewhoconsiderthemselvesasfrom“grassroots”. Andinthesedays,“grassroots”meanwell-groundedandpractical,while“ivorytower”meanshighontopandillusive
