2、ebasictoolsinhydrologicalcomputations.ItwasoriginallypresentedbyL.K.Shermanin1932.Itisfoundedupontheassumptionthattherainfallexcess-directrunoffprocessislinearwhichimpliesthattheprinciplesofsuperpositionandproportionalityhold.(ii)DirectrunoffDirectrunoffisthediffere
3、ncebetweenthetotalrunoffandbaseflow.Itisthatcomponentdirectlyresultingfromrainfall.(iii)RainfallexcessRainfallexcessisthatportionoftherainfallthatcontributestodirectrunoff.Theprinciplesofproportionalityandsuperpositionleadtoveryusefulpracticalapplicationsoftheunithy
4、drographconcept.Forexample,ahydrographofdischargeresultingfromaseriesofrainfallexcessesmaybeconstructedbysummingupthehydrographsduetoeachsingleunitofrainfallexcess.Theyalsoimplythatthetimebaseofdirectrunoffhydrographsresultingfromrainfallexcessesofsameunitdurationis
