3、xpermanentmagnet(AFPM)in-wheelsynchronousmotorforelectricvehicles(EVs).AFPMmotorisapancake-typehightorquedensitymotorthatfitsperfectlythewheelofanautomobilevehicleandthatcan,thus,beeasilyandcompactlyintegratedintothewheel.Therefore,AFPMmotorseemstobeabet

4、terchoicethanradialfluxpermanentmagnet(RFPM)motorforthiskindofapplication.First,adesignprogramofAFPMsynchronousmotorsdevelopedbytheauthorsinMatlabenvironmentispresentedandvalidatedbyexperimentalresults.Thisprogramisverysimpletouseandusefulduringthefirsts

5、tageofthedesignofanewmotorinordertoevaluateitsperformancesandoveralldimensionswithreasonableaccuracy(althoughmoresophisticatedmethods,suchasFiniteElementAnalysis(FEA),arerequiredinmoreadvancedphasesofthedesign).Inasecondtime,thisprogramisusedtodesignoneo

6、fthefourin-wheelmotorsofanurbanEV.TheresultsconfirmthatAFPMmotorisacompetitivechoiceforthisapplication.Indeed,itmeetsalltherequirementsoftheEVandfitsperfectlytheshapeandsizeofaclassicalrimofanautomobilevehiclewheel.Moreover,theresultsarecomparedwiththose

7、obtainedforamoreconventionalRFPMmotor.ThiscomparisonshowsthatAFPMmotorisabetterchoicethanRFPMmotorforin-wheelmotorapplications.IntroductionSinceNeodymium-Iron-Bore(NdFeB)permanentmagnet(PM)materialswereinventedin1980’s,PMmachinesaremoreandmoreusedinlarge

8、-scaleindustrialapplicationswhereothertypesofmachineswerepreferredbefore.Moreover,thisinventiongavenewpossibilitiesfortheuseofaxialfieldmachinesuntilthenverylimitedinindustrialapplications.ItwasalsofoundoutthatAFPMmachines
