3、ergraduatingfromGeorgiaStateCollegeforWomen(nowGeorgiaCollege&StateUniversity)in1945,shestudiedcreativewritingattheUniversityofIowaWriters’Workshop.Herfirstpublishedwork,ashortstory,appearedinthemagazineAccentin1946.Herfirstnovel,WiseBlood(1952;film1979),explored,inO
4、’Connor’sownwords,the“religiousconsciousnesswithoutareligion.”WiseBloodconsistsofaseriesofnear-independentchapters—manyofwhichoriginatedinpreviouslypublishedshortstories—thattellthetaleofHazelMotes,amanwhoreturnshomefrommilitaryserviceandfoundstheChurchWithoutChrist,
5、whichleadstoaseriesofinteractionswiththegrotesqueinhabitantsofhishometown.Theworkcombinesthekeenearforcommonspeech,causticreligiousimagination,andflairfortheabsurdthatweretocharacterizehersubsequentwork.Withthepublicationoffurthershortstories,firstcollectedinAGoodMan
