2、tculturalproduction;sec-ond,thepatriarchalcharacterofsocialistrevolution;and,finally,aconcep-tionofwomen’scinemaasamarginalizedpractice,disruptiveorsubversiveofmainstreampatriarchalculture.AlthoughmorenuancedscholarshiphasemergedfromChinesesocialistfilmstudiesandgenderstudiessi
3、ncetheendofthe1980s,ithasnotsucceededindisplacingtheseproblematic1frames.Inthisessay,IanalyzeTheStoryofLiubaoVillageð柳堡的故事;1957Þ,apopularmainstreamfilmbyWangPingð1916–90Þ,China’sfirstso-cialistwomandirector,todemonstratehowColdWarandliberalaswellasradicalfeministpresumptionsdis
4、tortcontemporaryWesternunderstand-ingsofsocialistfeminismandculturalproductioninChina.Incontrasttotheliberalandradicalfeministarticulationsofindividualismandautonomy,andacine-feministvisionofwomen’scinemaascountercinema,Iofferanaccountofneglecteddynamicsbetweensocialistcinema
5、andgenderthatil-luminatetheinterdependentrelationshipbetweenwomenandthesocialistsystem;theintimateinteractionsamonggenderandotherpolitical,social,andculturalforces;andthemultipleroleswomendirectorsplayedinfilm-making.Idemonstratethatasapedagogicalandideologicalapparatusofso-ci
6、alistChina,mainstreamcinemaplayedasignificantroleincombatingpatriar-chalconventionsandpromotinggenderequalitybydisseminatinghistoricallyunparalleledmodelheroines.Whetherinsidethefilmorbehindthecamera,TheNationalEndowmentfortheHumanitiesfellowshipð2010–11Þofferedthemostimportant
