3、ifeandrepulsesallalternatives,its"project"istoconvertnatureandpeopleinto"stuff1,anditabsorbscriticismbyco-optingitfromwithin.AlthoughMarcusedidnotforseethecollapseofEuropeanCommunism,hiswritingsaboutthedominationoftheindustrialworldaremoreprescient:theauthorfindstheprogressoffreemark
4、etcapitalismhasactuallyspeededup,withdiastrousconsequencesforboththeworld'spoorestpeopleanditsphysicalecology.Usingcontemporaryhistorians,criticsandwritersthatcansupportMarcuse'sanalysis,aswellaspersonalexperiencesandobservations,theauthorcitessourcesthatshow40,000peopledieofstarvati
5、oneveryday,that90millionpeopleareborneveryyear,andabout1/3oftheworldlivesinarealmofexploitationandsuffering.Inaddition,theenvironmentisirreparablydamaged,andcapitalismmayconsumeitselfwithautomationandelectronicfinancialspeculation.Theauthorproposesareasonablestandardoflivingforindivi
