2、withanactionconsistingpurelyoftheChern-Simonsterm,isexactlysolubleandgivesanaturalframeworkforunderstandingtheJonespolynomialofknottheoryinthreedimensionalterms.Inthisversion,theJonespolynomialcanbegeneralizedfromS3toarbitrarythreemanifolds,givinginvariantsofthreemanifoldsthatarecomp
3、utablefromasurgerypresentation.Theseresultsshedasurprisingnewlightonconformalfieldtheoryin1+1dimensions.InalectureattheHermannWeylSymposiumlastyear[1],MichaelAtiyahproposedtwoproblemsforquantumfieldtheorists.ThefirstproblemwastogiveaphysicalinterpretationtoDonaldsontheory.Thesecondpr
4、oblemwastofindanintrinsicallythreedimensionaldefinitionoftheJonespolynomialofknottheory.Thesetwoproblemsmightroughlybedescribedasfollows.Donaldsontheoryisakeytounderstandinggeometryinfourdimensions.Fouristhephysicaldimensionatleastmacroscopically,soonemaytakeaslightlibertyandsaythatD
