4、sthemostimportantspecialcaseforestimatingaveragetreatmenteffectsinpractice.Alternativestypicallyinvolvesstrongassumptionslink-ingunobservablestoobservablesinspecificwaysinordertoallowadjustingfortherelevantdifferencesinunobservedvariables.Anexampleofsucha
5、strategyisinstrumentalvariables,whichwillbediscussedinLecture3.AsecondexamplethatdoesnotinvolveadditionalassumptionsistheboundsapproachdevelopedbyManski(1990,2003).Underthespecificassumptionswemakeinthissetting,thepopulationaveragetreat-√menteffectcanbee
6、stimatedatthestandardparametricNratewithoutfunctionalformassumptions.Avarietyofestimators,atfirstsightquitedifferent,havebeenproposedforimplementingthis.Theestimatorsincluderegressionestimators,propensityscorebasedes-timatorsandmatchingestimators.Manyoft
7、heseareusedinpractice,althoughrarelyisthischoicemotivatedbyprincipledarguments.Inpracticethedifferencesbetweentheesti-matorsarerelativelyminorwhenappliedappropriately,althoughmatchingincombinationwithregressionisgenerallymorerobustandisprobablytherecomm
