1、CHAPTERIIIASAMATHEMATICIAN11.MyEmbarkationasaMathematicianAftergraduatingfromtheUniversityofTokyoin1952,IobtainedapositionasanassistantattheCollegeofGeneralEducationoftheUniversityofTokyo.ThiswasatenuredpositioninthesensethatIwasagovernmentemployeewhowouldneverbefired,andmores
2、ignificantly,wouldreceiveanextremelymeagersalary.Allmembersofthedepartmentabovetheageoftwenty-sixatthattimewerecontenttobeteachersofcalculus,andIhadnointentionofbecomingamemberofthatgroup.Intheperiod1952–1953,IbegantofindvaguelyinwhichwayIshouldproceed.Istartedadefinitemathemati
3、calprojectintheearlymonthsof1953,andcompleteditaroundOctoberthatyear,whichIcancallthestartingpointofmycareerasamathematician.Beforenarratingthisproject,Ifirstmentiontwoincidents.InthatyearClaudeChevalleyvisitedJapan,andgaveaseriesoflecturesattheUniversityofTokyoonhistheoryofal
4、gebraicgroups.Hewasdevelopingthetheoryonhisown,whichmainlyconcernedlinearalgebraicgroups.Hislectureswerewellprepared,andcontainednewformulationswhichwereusefulforresearchersinthatfield,butasawholetheylackedfreshness,atleasttome.Iwaslookingforsomethingreallynew,whichwouldletmes
