3、thatescapethecombustionsystemarerecognizedtohaveanegativeimpactonhealthandtheenvironmentduetotheenrichmentofthetoxictraceelementsandbeingreadilyinhaled.Thisworkgivesabriefreviewofthestudiescarriedoutinthepastdecadesandtriestoelucidatethoseprocessesthatcontributetoashform
4、ation.Theyincludethemechanismsthatcontrolsubmicronashformationandthosethatarerelatedtoresidualashformation.Themechanismofvaporizationandcondensationisbelievedtobethemajorsourceofsubmicronashparticlesandisdiscussedindetailinthisreview.Residualashformationistheconsequenceo
5、fthecompetitionbetweenashcoalescenceandcharfiagmentation.Moreover,fiagmentationofexcludedmineralsandrotationallyinducedsheddingmayalsocontributetotheresidualashformation.Ourliteraturereviewhasprovidedanumberofexperimentalandtheoreticalresultsdescribinghowthesubmicronasha
6、ndresidualashareformed,Finallywepresentsomerecommendationsforpossiblefutureresearchtopics,includingsamplingtechniques,measurementtechniques,experimentalstudiesandmodellingefforts.IntroductionConsumptionofcoalisoneofthemajorsourcesformeetingworldenergyneeds,andtheimportan
