2、rokenaccidentsoccurredbecauseofinappropriatemaintenancethatcausestheignoranceofbrokenwiresinasteelrope.Elevatorropeshaveverycomplicatedstructureastheyareformedbytwistedmanysmallwirestogethertoformabiggerrope.Suchcomplicatedstructurecreatesdifficultytocurrentlyavailablenon-d

3、estructiveevaluationmethods.Toavoidtheaccidents,propermaintenanceequippedwitheffectivenon-destructivetestingmethodthatmustbepresented.However,asoftoday,mostoftheelevatorropeinspectionsaredependsonhumanvisualinspection.Suchinspectionfailstodetectfaultsoccurredininternalwire

4、sandevenexternalwiresduetothecoveringofgreaseontheropes.Theaimofthisstudyistointroduceanewandeffectivetechniquebasedonultrasonicguidedwavesforinspectingthefaultsoccurredininternalandexternalwires.Theexperimentalresultsdemonstratethattheultrasonicguidedwavecandetectthelocat

5、ionsofbrokenwiresandthendeterminethenumberofbrokenwireseffectively.TheexperimentalresultsalsoshowthatthePZTsensorismoresuitableforworkingasatransmitter/emitterandtheMsSisbetterworkingasareceiver.Forgreasecoveredropes,theresultsshowthattherangeofinspectiondistancewillbedecr

6、easedduetotheattenuationofthereflectedsignalenergy.Nonetheless,thereflectedsignalcausedbythedefectscanstillbeclearlyobservedeventheropewascoveredbygrease.Althoughthecurrentresultsarepromising,moresophisticatedmethodmustbedevelopedsothattheproposedtechniquecanbeappliedtoon-si
