2、VirgiliTarragona,SpainThe‘philosophyofdialogue’(Buber,Marcel,Levinas,Ricoeur)hasbeenrelatedtotranslationethicsintheworkofArnaudLaygues.Thistraditionunderscorestheneedtoopentheselftotheother,makingtranslationanintimatedialogueinwhichoneshould‘receivetheothe
3、rasother’(Berman),‘translatethetextasaperson’(Laygues),andindeedthenperceivethatwe,astranslators,areultimately‘otherstoourselves’(Kristeva).Theunderlyingethicalposition,however,assumesamodeofpresencethatisscarcelytenableintermsofananthropologyoftechnology.
4、Howcanweenterintoadialoguewithanotherwho,thankstodisplacementthroughinscription,isneverwhollythere?Thisdisplacementisfundamentaltotherelationbetweenalltechnologyandlanguage.Intheageofelectronictechnology,thehumanizationofthesourcetextultimatelybecomesanact
5、ofmassiveself-deception,usingtheothernessoftheotherasthemarkofelitistleverage.Theethicaldialoguemustinsteadseekcooperationwiththeend-usersoftranslations,unforgivablyexcludedfromtheclassicalphilosophiesofotherness.TranslationandthephilosophyofdialogueArnaud
6、Laygues(2001,2005,2007)developsaphilosophyoftranslationfromMartinBuber’sIchundDu,firstpublishedin1923:Theattitudeofpeople[derMensch]istwofold,inaccordancewiththetwofoldnatureoftheprimarywordswespeak.Theprimarywordsarenotisolatedwords,butcombinedwords.Theon
