3、e,manyofShakespeare’scharactersarebasedoncharactersthatappearedinancientGreekandRomantalesandplays.JamesJoyce’sgreatnovelUlyssesisbasedonHomer’sOdyssey(UlyssesistheRomanequivalentoftheGreekOdysseus).Indeed,weseethatmuchofwhatiswrit-ten;manyplots,andch
4、aracters,haveallbeendonebefore,over2,000yearsago.OursagabeginsintheeighthcenturyBCE.Poetstravelledfromcitytocityrecitingtheirpoemsandpassingthemontofuturegenerations.Sometimearound750BCElivedagreatpoetnamedHomer,sothestorygoes.Notmuchisknownabouthiman
5、dnothingofrecordsurvives.Inthosedaysmythsandtaleswerepassedonintheoraltradition.SomescholarsbelieveHomermayhavebeenawoman,orthathewasblind.Othersbelievethatthegreatpoemsattributedtohimwereac-tuallytheworksofmorethanoneauthor.Whateverthetruthmaybe,itha
