3、becomemoreconvincingandmorepracticableysisisabibliometricmethodcapableoftracingthethroughtheeffortsofmanysubsequentresearchers.mostsignificantpathsinacitationnetworkandiscom-Inmodern-dayterminology,the“topologicalnetworkdia-monlyusedtotracethedevelopmenttraject
4、oryofaresearchfield.Wehighlightseverallimitationsoftheorig-grams”isacitationnetworkwherethenodesrepresentinalmainpathanalysisandsuggestnew,complementarypublicationsandthelinksrepresentthecitationrelationshipsapproachestoovercometheselimitations.Incontrasttoamon
5、gthesepublications.Garfieldetal.(1964)establishedtheoriginallocalmainpath,thenewapproachesgener-acitationnetworkofDNApublicationsandthentracedtheatetheglobalmainpath,thebackwardlocalmainpath,significantpublicationsbasedontheircitationcounts.Themultiplemainpaths,
6、andkey-routemainpaths.Eachofthemisobtainedviaaperspectivedifferentfromtheorig-setofDNApublicationsthattheyinvestigatedwassmall(40inalapproach.Bysimultaneouslyconductingthenew,publications)suchthatthetaskwasmanageable.Presently,complementaryapproaches,oneuncove
7、rsthekeydevel-theaccumulatedpublicationsetformostofscienceisrela-opmentofthetargetdisciplinefromabroaderview.tivelylarge,andwithoutsomesortofquantitativemethod,itTodemonstratethevalueofthesenewapproaches,wewouldnotbepossibleto“writethehistoryofscience”fromsimu
