2、randmusicalelementsthatcreatethesesoundswillappearinhis/herworks.Inadditiontobeinginfluencedthroughthelisteningprocess,musicalelementsofotherscomposersarelearnedbyanalyzingtheirworks,transcribingcompositionsorothermeansofstudyandwillalsolikelyfindthe
3、irwayintocompositions.Thestudyofmusictheorywillalsoinfluencewhatappearsinwhatevertheywriteorarrange.Becauseofalltheseinfluencesandmanymorethingsthatimpactaparticularcomposition,itisdifficulttodetermineaspecificinfluencerformostcomposers.However,mostt
4、imeswhentheyareaskedwhoseworkstheyadmire,theyareabletonameseveralcomposersthataremoremeaningful.Inmycase,therearetwocomposers,BillEvans(1929-1980)andBillyStrayhorn(1915-1967),whosecompositionshaveaparticularresonancewithme.WhyamIdrawntothesecomposers
5、?WhydoIenjoylisteningtotheirworks?WhydoIenjoyplayingtheirtunesonthepiano?TheseareallquestionsthatIhavebeenunabletoanswerotherthanIenjoylisteningtothem.Aspartofmyinterestinandstudyofjazz,Ihavebeguntocomposetunestobeplayedprimarilybysmalljazzensembles.
6、Iftheabovehypothesisistrue,characteristicsofEvans'sandStrayhorn'smusicshouldappearinmycompositions.Otherthanlisteningtotheircompositionsplayedbygroupsorindividuals,andplayingsomeofthemonthepiano,noformalstudyoftheirworkshasbeenundertakennorhasextensi
7、vetranscriptionoftheirworksbeendonepriortowritingthispaper.Consequently,anymusicalelementscontainedinmycompositionscome2fromabsorbingacertainsoundthatiscommonintheirtunesandcomposingpiecesthatmayincorporatetheseelementswithoutrealizingit.Theprocessof
8、osmosisisatworkastherehasnotbeenanyconsciousattempttoemulateeitherofthem.Thispaper'spurposeistoanalyzewhetheranymusicalcharacteristicsofthecompositionsofEvansandStrayhornappearinthecompositionsofBillMurray.Aseriesofmusicalcharacteristicsthatappearins
