2、inwhichtoanalyzethedeterminantsandpsychosocialmechanismsthroughwhichsymboliccommunicationinfluenceshumanthought,affectandaction.Communicationssystemsoperatethroughtwopathways.Inthedirectpathway,theypromotechangesbyinforming,enabling,motivating,andguidingparticipants.Inthe
3、sociallymediatedpathway,mediainfluenceslinkparticipantstosocialnetworksandcommunitysettingsthatprovidenaturalincentivesandcontinuedpersonalizedguidance,fordesiredchange.Socialcognitivetheoryanalyzessocialdiffusionofnewstylesofbehaviorintermsofthepsychosocialfactorsgoverni
4、ngtheiracquisitionandadoptionandthesocialnetworksthroughwhichtheyspreadandaresupported.Structuralinterconnectednessprovidespotentialdiffusionpaths;sociocognitivefactorslargelydeterminewhatdiffusesthroughthosepaths.Becauseoftheinfluentialrolethemassmediaplayinsociety,under
5、standingthepsychosocialmechanismsthroughwhichsymboliccommunicationinfluenceshumanthought,affect,andactionisofconsiderableimport.Socialcognitivetheoryprovidesanagenticconceptualframeworkwithinwhichtoexaminethedeterminantsandmechanismsofsucheffects.Humanbehaviorhasoftenbeen
