2、verthelastdecade,wehaveundertakenextendedoperationsinIraqandAfghanistantobringstabilitytothosecountriesandsecureourinterests.Asweresponsiblydrawdownfromthesetwooperations,takestepstoprotectournationLseconomicvitality,andprotectourinterestsinaworldofacceleratingchange,wefaceaninflectionpoint.Thi
3、smeritedanassessmentoftheU.S.defensestrategyinlightofthechanginggeopoliticalenvironmentandourchangingfiscalcircumstances.ThisassessmentreflectsthePresidentLsstrategicdirectiontotheDepartmentandwasdeeplyinformedbytheDepartmentLscivilianandmilitaryleadership,includingtheJointChiefsofStaff,theSecr
4、etariesoftheMilitaryDepartments,andtheCombatantCommanders.OutoftheassessmentwedevelopedadefensestrategythattransitionsourDefenseenterprisefromanemphasisontodayLswarstopreparingforfuturechallenges,protectsthebroadrangeofU.S.nationalsecurityinterests,advancestheDepartmentLseffortstorebalanceandre
5、form,andsupportsthenationalsecurityimperativeofdeficitreductionthroughalowerlevelofdefensespending.ThisstrategicguidancedocumentdescribestheprojectedsecurityenvironmentandthekeymilitarymissionsforwhichtheDepartmentofDefense(DoD)willprepare.ItisintendedasablueprintfortheJointForcein2020,providin
6、gasetofpreceptsthatwillhelpguidedecisionsregardingthesizeandshapeoftheforceoversubsequentprogramandbudgetcycles,andhighlightingsomeofthestrategicrisksthatmaybeassociatedwiththeproposedstrategy.AChallengingGlobalSecurityEnvironmentTheglobalsecurityenvironmentpresentsanincreasinglycomplexsetofcha
