3、ivememories,whichcanthenserveasafoundationforthewritingoffictionalworks.Creativewritinghasameioticfunctionandisassuchapowerfultoolcapableofrescuingmemoriesfromoblivionandbringingthembacktolife,thusreconcilingthepastwiththepresent.Thepresentarticleseekstobringtobearnewperspectivesontherelatio
4、nshipbetweenanovelist’spersonalmemories,collectivememory,andthefictionalnarrativespartiallyinspiredbythesetwotypesofmemory.Inthefirstsectionwebrieflyexaminethedistinctiontraditionallymadebetweenindividualmemoryandcollectivememory,whichwethentrytoreconcilesoastoarriveatanapproachtothemnemonic
5、phenomenonthatbestfitstheneedsofliteraryscholars.Inthesecondsectionwechallengetheconventionaldistinctionmadebetweenmemoryandfiction,showinginsteadhowthetwoconceptsarelinkedandfocusing,amongotherthings,onthetheoryof“memoryplasticity,”whichholdsthatimaginationplaysanimportantroleintheformation
