3、abilityinprogramsandotherengineeredsystems.Bycontrast,commonpracticeofcomputerscienceactivelydiscouragestheconstruc-tionofrobustsystems.1RobustnessItisdiculttodesignamechanismofgeneralutilitythatdoesanypartic-ularjobverywell,somostengineeredsystemsaredesignedtoperformaspeci cjob.Gene

4、ral-purposeinventions,suchasthescrewfastener,whentheyappear,areofgreatsigni cance.Thedigitalcomputerisabreak-throughofthiskind,becauseitisauniversalmachinethatcansimulateanyotherinformation-processingmachine.Wewritesoftwarethatcon guresourcomputerstoe ectthissimulationforthespeci cjob

5、sthatweneeddone.Wehavebeendesigningoursoftwaretodoparticularjobsverywell,asanextensionofourpastengineeringpractice.Eachpieceofsoftwareisdesignedtodoarelativelynarrowjob.Astheproblemtobesolvedchanges,thesoftwaremustbechanged.Butsmallchangestotheproblemtobesolveddonotentailonlysmallchan
