3、ionoftheart.IntroductionOneofthedifficultiesfacingadiagrammeristhatofconsistencywiththepast,hislocalfoldinggroup,2thenationalscene,andpotentialco-authors.InthecaseofTheFriends,thereisalsothequestionofconsistencywithwhathasbeenprintedbeforeinconventionprograms,teachingsessions,andotherarticlesinth
4、eFriends’Newsletter(suchasDavidShall’sconcurrentseriesofarticles).Minordifferencesappear,forexample,insymbolslistsprintedintheFriends’Newsletter#27(Fallof’87)andtheAnnualConvention’88program(Springof’88).Whenyoubringinbooks,thesituationgetsevenmorecomplicated.Ihavewritten,oramworkingondiagramsfor
5、,threedifferentbooks,twowithaco-author.Becauseweeachhadstrongopinionsaboutwhatsymbolswerebest,weendedupcompromising,andImustuseadifferentsetofsymbolsforeachproject.Asconfusingasthisisfora3diagrammer,itisboundtobeworseforthereader.BeforeConvention’88,anumberoffoldersrecognizedthattherewasaneedfors
6、tandardization,andTheFriendshavetakenstepstowardthatend,forexample,publishingthelistsjustmentioned.Beforetheconvention,Isentaquestionnairetosome25diagrammersaroundtheworld;manyreturnednotonlythequestionnairebutsentpagesofadditionalcomments.Attheconventionitself,weheldapaneldiscussiononuniformityt
7、hatincludedmostoftheAmericandiagrammersandsomeoverseasparticipantsaswell.Itsresults,andtheresultsofthequestionnaire,willbeincludedinthearticlesthatfollow.ThisarticlekicksoffaseriesinwhichIwilltakeadetailedlookatdiagram
