2、injury.Twotypesoffilamentsusedforocclusionweretestedintermsofsurgicalsuccess,incidenceofsubarachnoidhemorrhage,andmortality:astandard6-0monofilamentcoatedwithmethylmethacrylateglue(rigidprobe)andan8-0monofilamentcoatedwithsilicone(flexibleprobe).In98wild-type(WT)mice,theflexibleprobeproducedsignifi-c
3、antly(P.05)moresuccessfulstrokes(73.5%)thantherigidprobe(46.6%).Theincidencesofsubarachnoidhemorrhage(3.7%)andmortality(5.6%)withtheflexibleprobeweresignificantlylowerthanthosewiththerigidprobe(26.6%and11.1%,respectively).Rigidandflexibleprobeswerealsocomparedinhemeoxygenase1knockout(n17)andWTli
4、ttermates(n17),becauseknockoutmicehavebeensuggestedtohavemorefragilebloodvessels.Allmicereceivingtheflexibleprobehadsuccessfulstrokes,withnocasesofsubarachnoidhemorrhageormortality;however,withtherigidprobe,thesuccessratewasonly80%intheWTmiceand60%intheknockoutmice.Theratesofsubarachnoidhemorrh
5、ageandmortalitywerealsosignificantlyhigherwiththerigidprobeinbothgenotypes,buttheinfarctvolumesproducedbyeachtypeofprobedidnotdiffersignificantlybetweenthe2groups.Weconcludethattheflexiblesilicone-coated8-0probeissuperiortothemorerigidglue-coatedprobe,becauseitproducesinfarctvolumesofequalsizewith
