2、enorth.Vaniliaisfederalstatedividedintothreeprovincesandhasapopulationofaround20millionpeople.ItispopulatedbytheLemipeoplewhoaremostlyProtestantandSwarohispeaking(56%ofpopulation)andbytheNomagpeoplewhoareCatholicandNomagispeaking(32%ofpopulation).TheNomagpeople,thoughspreadacrossthecountry,areinthe

3、majorityintheprovinceofLosovo,whichbordersBerryland.ManybelievethattheNomagscametoVaniliafromBerrylandduringthecolonialperiodasindenturedlabourers.OthersthinkthatLosovoisinfacttheoriginallandoftheNomags,andthattheylaterspreadfromLosovointoBerryland.ItwasmadepartofVaniliaonlybecauseoftheexistingcolo

4、nialadministrativedivisionsatthetimeofindependence.Owingtothecircumstancesoftheindependenceofthethreecountrieswhichleftmanyissuesunresolved,VaniliacontinuestohaveborderdisputeswithitsneighboursMingoliaandBerryland.Therehavebeensporadicborderincidentswithexchangeoffireacrosstheborders.2.Aftertheinde

5、pendence,Vaniliaadoptedapoliticalsystemofrepresentativedemocracywithamultipartysystem.ThePresidentappointstheleaderofthepartywhichwinsthemajorityinthelegislativeelectionsasPrimeMinister,whothenchoosesthemembersofhiscabinetamongelecteddeputies.ThePeople'sUnitedDemocraticParty(PUDP)hasformedthesucces

6、sivegovernmentssinceindependence.ThoughthePUDPclaimstobesecularandhavecountrywidesupport,itismainlysupportedbytheLemis.ItsmainpoliticalagendaissaidtobetheprotectionandpromotionofLemirightsandwell-being(whichfeelthattheywerediscriminatedagainstasaminorityduringthecolonialera).TheFederalDemocraticPar

7、ty(FDP)hasbeenthemainoppositionpartyandopenlyclaimstoprotecttheinterestsoftheNomags.3.ThereisageneralresentmentamongNomagsthattheyhavebeenneglectedbythesuccessivegovernmentsandarenotproportionatelyrepresent
