2、largenumberofprojectsaroundtheworld.While,ingeneral,ithasbeenfoundtobesatisfactory,therearesomeuncertaintiesandinaccuraciesthathavemadethecriterioninconvenienttoapplyandtoincorporateintonumericalmodelsandlimitequilibriumprograms.Inparticular,thedifficultyoffindinganaccep
3、tableequivalentfrictionangleandcohesivestrengthforagivenrockmasshasbeenaproblemsincethepublicationofthecriterionin1980.Thispaperresolvesalltheseissuesandsetsoutarecommendedsequenceofcalculationsforapplyingthecriterion.AnassociatedWindowsprogramcalled“RocLab”hasbeendevelo
4、pedtoprovideaconvenientmeansofsolvingandplottingtheequationspresentedinthispaper.1.INTRODUCTIONstrengthtozeroforverypoorqualityrockmasses(Hoek,WoodandShah,[7]).HoekandBrown[1,2]introducedtheirfailurecriterioninanattempttoprovideinputdatafortheOneoftheearlydifficultiesaro
5、sebecausemanyanalysesrequiredforthedesignofundergroundgeotechnicalproblems,particularlyslopestabilityexcavationsinhardrock.Thecriterionwasderivedissues,aremoreconvenientlydealtwithintermsoffromtheresultsofresearchintothebrittlefailureofshearandnormalstressesratherthanthe
