1、INTRODUCTIONTheliteratureintranslationstudieshastraditionallybeenpreoccupiedwithelaborat-ingvarioustypesofdichotomiesandtaxonomies,andtosomeextentmuchofitstillis.Thisvolumeattemptstoorientthedisciplineawayfromdichotomiesandtax-onomiesasmuchaspossible,whilerecognizingthatsomem
2、aybeembeddedwithinasophisticatedandenrichingdiscoursethatisworthengagingwith.Onthewhole,theworkrepresentedhereassumes,implicitlyorexplicitly,thathumanbehaviouristoocomplexandtoodynamictobestreamlinedintostablesetsofchoicesthatcanbetiedtospecifictextualornon-textualfeatures.Asa
3、formofhumanbehaviour,translationcannotbeproductivelyexplainedasaconsistentchoicebetweentwoor1morediscretesetsofstrategiesoroptions,howevernuanced.Translationstudieshascomeofage.Somuchso,Iwouldargue,thatwearenowinapositiontomovesafelyandconfidentlynotonlybeyonddichotomiesandtax
4、-onomies,butalsobeyondthefoundationalliteratureandscholarlycanon,andbeyondreiteratingandreassertingcoreassumptions,revisitingourinstitutionalhistory,anddefendingourdisciplinaryagendas.Whileholdingontoearlierachievements,wecannowengagewithinnovativenewresearchthatisnotnecessar
5、-ilyindebtedtothetheorieswithwhichwearemostfamiliar.Wecanaffordtothinkoutsidethebox.Thiscollectionisthereforedeliberatelyprospectiveratherthanretro-spectiveinorientation.Thematerialincludedinithasbeenselectedtohelpusmoveon,toexplorenewground,ratherthanpaytributetoandconsolida
6、tepastachieve-ments.Itismeanttoprovidepointerstowardsthefutureandopenupthefieldtoinnovativeconceptsandtheoreticalapproaches,aswellastovoicesandperspectivesfromawiderangeoftraditions,beyondthedominantAnglo-Saxonworld.Someofthematerialwillalreadybefamiliar,buteventherewhatisfami
7、liarhasbeencom-binedwithlessfamiliarcontributionsinordertoexplorearangeofthemesthatIseeaskeytomovingthedisciplineforward.Tothisend,theemphasisthroughoutisoncontemporarycriticalmaterialculledfromabroadrangeofsources,includingbutnotrestrictedtosourcesinmainstreamtranslationstud
