3、ith),graduatedin1761orthereabouts,embracedtheprinciplesoftheUnitarians,joinedtheirministry,andcrossedovertoEngland;beingsuccessivelypastoratWisbechinCambridgeshire,atMarshfieldinGloucestershire,andatMaidstone.AtWisbechhemarriedGraceLoftus,thedaughterofaneighbourin
4、gfarmer.Ofthemanychildrengrantedtothembutthreesurvivedinfancy.William,theyoungestofthese,wasborninMitreLane,Maidstone,onApril10,1778.FromMaidstonethefamilymovedin1780toBandon,Co.Cork;andfromBandonin1783toAmerica,whereMr.HazlittpreachedbeforethenewAssemblyoftheStat
5、es-GeneralofNewJersey,lecturedatPhiladelphiaontheEvidencesofChristianity,foundedtheFirstUnitarianChurchatBoston,anddeclinedaproffereddiplomaofD.D.In1786-7hereturnedtoEnglandandtookuphisabodeatWem,inShropshire.Hiselderson,John,wasnowoldenoughtochooseavocation,andch
6、osethatofaminiature-painter.Thesecondchild,Peggy,hadbeguntopaintalso,amateurishlyinoils.William,agedeight—achildoutofwhoserecollectionallmemoriesofBandonandofAmerica(savethetasteofbarberries)soonfaded—tookhiseducationathomeandatalocalschool.Hisfatherdesignedhimfor
