5、ol,Mohammaddirectedaburgeoningempire,andtheBuddhawasanitinerantplanterofmonas-teries.Theinstitutionallyengagedlifeisnotatallinimicaltoproduc-tivethinkingintheologyandinfactisagreatstimulusforthosewhohavetheenergyanddisciplinetosettheirownagenda.Nevertheless,aresp
6、onsibleinstitutionallocationcausessomediffi-culttensionsforthinkerssuchasMarkham(andmyself)whobelievethatChristiantheologyneedstoengageotherreligionsandthesecularworldforthedevelopmentofChristianthinking.Tobeginwith,anhonestengagementrequiresthatonemakesoneselfvul
7、nerabletothecasesofallthoseothers,andinprincipleonemustpresentoneselfaspersuadablewheretheothersarecriticalofone’sbrandofChristian-ity.OrofChristianityassuch.Orofreligion.Whenweleadourinsti-tutionsintoengagementsofthesortMarkhamadvocates,weknowthatourinstitutions
