2、A‘SleepingBeautyinScience’isapublicationthatgoesunnoticed(‘sleeps’)foralongtimeandthen,almostsuddenly,attractsalotofattention(‘isawakenedbyaprince’).Weherereportthe-toourknowledge-firstextensivemeasurementoftheoccurrenceofSleepingBeautiesinthesciencelite
3、rature.Wederivedfromthemeasurementsan‘awakening’probabilityfunctionandidentifiedthe‘mostextremeSleepingBeautysofar’.Introduction‘Beingaheadofone’stime’hasalwaysbothfascinatedandfrightenedscientists.Theirdearestpublicationmaybecomea‘SleepingBeauty’,anarti
4、clethatgoesunnoticed(‘sleeps’)foralongtimeandthen,almostsuddenly,attractsalotofattention.Itisourexperienceintheapplicationofbibliometricmethodsinresearchevaluation(MOEDetal.,1995;VANRAAN,1996)thatonquiteafewoccasions,scientistsclaimedthatoneormoreoftheir
5、publicationswillnotbepickedupforawhile,astheyare‘aheadoftime’.Wecallthisthe‘Mendelsyndrome’,mentionedafterGregorMendel(MENDEL,1865)whosediscoveriesinplantgeneticsweresounprecedentedthatittookthirty-fouryearsforthescientificcommunitytocatchuptoit.Sothesea
