3、urancestorsbegantospreadtoothercontinentssomefiftythousandyearsago.Thus,laterenvironmentshavenotgivenrisetonewtraitsthroughgeneticevolution.Thisbeliefrestsontwoarguments:1)suchtraitsarecomplexandthereforeevolvetooslowlytohavesubstantiallychangedoverthepastfiftythousandyears;2)becaus

4、ethesametimeframehasseenourspeciesdiversifyintomanyenvironments,recenttraitsshouldtendtobeenvironment-specificandhencepopulation-specific,yetsuchspecificityseemsinconsistentwiththehighgeneticoverlapamonghumanpopulations.Bothargumentsareweakerthantheyseem.Newcomplextraitscanariseovera

5、relativelyshorttimethroughadditions,deletions,ormodificationstoexistingcomplextraits,andgeneticoverlapcanbeconsiderableevenbetweenspeciesthataremorphologically,behaviorally,andphysiologicallydistinct.ThereisthusnoconceptualbarriertotheexistenceofEEAsinpost-Pleistocenetimes.Suchapar
