2、rocessingindustriessuchasthosethatproducepharmaceuticals,specialityandfinechemicals.Thefollowingarticledescribessomeofthespecialdesigncharacteristicsoftheseplantsthatmanufacturebymultiplestagechemicalsynthesisroutes.Tosetthesceneweneedtodefinewhatwemeanbymulti-p

3、roductandmulti-purposeplant(MPPs)i.e.batchmanufacturingprocessplantswheresomeoralloftheprocessingequipmentisintendedforthemanufactureofanumberofdifferentproducts.Somemayusethetermmulti-productplantinthesamecontextasamulti-purposeplant.Wedifferentiatebetweenthetw

4、odependingonwhethertheprocessesandproductsareknownfromtheoutset:multi-purposeplantapplieswherethesearenotknownfromtheoutset.Othersusetheterm‘generalpurpose’planttoindicatethattheprocessesarelikelytochange.Theindustriesreferencedabovetypicallyrequiremulti-purpose

5、plants(thoughtheymaywellbedesignedasmulti-productplants!).TheauthorsareawareofanumberofMPP’sthatwereinitiallysanctionedonthebasisofaspecificmulti-productrequirementthatduetounforeseencircumstancesneededtomanufacturedifferentmaterialsonceconstructed.Inthispaper,w
