3、gofthesoilasatargetmaterialpresentsaproblemwhichstemsfromthefactthatinsitusoil/rockisanon-linearanistropicmaterialandisfurthercomplicatedbyvariationsintheexistinglayeredstrata.A20-node,three-dimensional,isoparametric,dynamicfinite-elementmethodwasadoptedforthetargetmaterial,asshown
4、inFig.H.1.Eachlayerwasmodelledwithrespectivematerialproperties.Twotypesofexpansioncavities,namelycylindricalandspherical,weremodelled.Usingthecylindrically-expandingcavity,thetargetmaterialwasassumedtomoveradiallyonwardsasthemissilepenetrated.Theradialpressureinthecylindri-calcavi
5、tywasthenassumedtobeactingnormallyonthepenetratorsurface.Wheretherewasanangleofattack,apartfromaxialvelocities,anangularvelocitywasintroducedtothepenetratorasandwhentheangularorientationofthepenetratoroccurs.Whereasphericalcavityisassumed,thetargetmaterialwasthenassumedtomoveinadi
