2、therstudyattheFriedrichWilhelmUniversityinBerlin,hereturnedtotheUnitedStatesin1894totakeateachingpositioninclassicsatWilberforceUniversityinXenia,Ohio.DuBoisbecamethefirstblacktoreceivehisPh.D.fromHarvardin1895andmovedtoPhiladelphiathenextyeartopursueasocio-logicalstudyof
3、blacklifethere.AfteracceptingafacultypositionineconomicsandhistoryatAtlantaUniversity,hegainedrenownasanintellectualinthenextdecadewiththepublicationofTheSoulsofBlackFolk(1903)andhisparticipationintheNiagaraMovement,agroupofblackleadersassembledin1905topromotefullcivilan
4、deconomicrightsforblacks.In1910DuBoismovedtoNewYork,whereheacceptedapositionattheNationalAssociationfortheAdvancementofColoredPeople(NAACP)astheeditorofthecivilrightsorganization’smonthlyjournal,TheCrisis.InFebruary1919inParis,DuBoisorganizedtheFirstPan-AfricanCongress,w
5、hichgathereddelegatesfromtheUnitedStates,theCaribbean,Europe,andAfrica.Hecontinuedtopublishasteadystreamofimportantbooks,includingDarkwater(1920),DarkPrincess(1928),andBlackReconstruction(1935).Afteraseriesofpoliticalconflicts,DuBoisresignedfromTheCrisisin1934andreturnedt
6、oAtlantaUniversity,wherehefoundedandeditedanotherjournal,Phylon.IncreasinglyradicalinhispubliccriticismofUSforeignpolicyandracerelationsaftertheSecondWorldWar,DuBoisworkedwithpacifistorgan-izationsandtheCouncilonAfricanAffairs.AftercelebratinghisninetiethbirthdayinNewYork,
7、DuBoistouredEurope,theSovietUnion,andChinain1958and1959.In1961heacceptedtheinvitationofKwameNkrumah,thepresidentofindependentGhana,tomovetoAfrica.DuBoisdiedinGhanaon27August1963,ontheeveofthemonumentalcivilrightsprotestmarchinWashington,DC.BrentHayesEdwardsisanassociatep
