3、esiteofanundergroundcoalgasificationexperimentconductednearGillette,Wyoming.Waterfrommorethan12wellsinthevicinityoftheexperimenthasbeensampledbefore,during,andupto25monthsfollowinggasification.Watersampleswereanalyzedforavarietyofcharacteristics,includingthepre
4、senceof70inorganicspecies,phenolicmaterialsandvolatileandsemi-volatileorganics.Wefindagreatlyincreasedconcentrationoforganicmaterials,particularlyphenols,justoutsidetheburnboundaryandavarietyofinorganicspeciesissuingfromwithintheresidualashbed.Alldetectablecont
5、aminantsrapidlydecreasedinconcentrationwithdistance,althoughabove-backgroundlevelsofsomematerialsweredetected30m(100ft.)fromtheburnzonewithinthreedaysofthegasification.Severalimportantcontaminantsshowedalargedecreaseinconcentrationwithtimedue,probably,toadsorpt
6、ion.Ourresultssuggestasimplephysicalpictureofthedevelopmentofgroundwaterpollutionnearanunder-groundcoalgasifier.INTRODUCTIONUndergroundcoalgasificationoffersimportantenvironmentaladvantagesincomparisonwithmoreconventionalmethodsofcoalrecovery.However,therearece
7、rtainenvironmentalconcernsthatrequirecarefulevaluation.Thepossibili-tythatundergroundreactionproductsmaycauseadversechangesinground-waterqualityisparticularlyimportant.TheLawrenceLivermoreLaboratory(LLL)ispursuingathree-partprogramtoclarifythenatureandsignifica
8、nceofthegroundwaterquestion.Theprogramactivitiesincludealaboratoryinvestiga-tionofgasificationreactionproductsandtheirinteractionwithcoal,amodelingstudyoftheevolvingplumeofc
